Biography

Julia J. Mack is a faculty member in the UCLA Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. Julia received her B.A. in Chemistry at the College of the Holy Cross and her Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from UCLA. After receiving her degree, she worked in the Materials Division at Teledyne Scientific designing functional composite materials for aerospace and biomedical applications. Her interest in the field of regenerative medicine sparked her decision to leave industry and return to UCLA in 2011 as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology. During her postdoc, she studied the role of endothelial NOTCH1 in arterial homeostasis and collaborated with engineers to design bioreactor systems that control fluid flow in 3D matrices. In July 2018, Julia became faculty at UCLA and initiated her research group in the David Geffen School of Medicine. She was awarded a Career Development Award from the American Heart Association and serves as a mentor for the AHA STEM Goes Red LA Program. Her research group studies the mechanobiology of endothelial signaling using high resolution imaging techniques and utilizes multiple in vivo models to interpret the role of blood flow forces in cardiovascular health.
