Research Interests
According to D.H. Jansen, the plant root can be described as the plant gut because like the gut, the root-bacteria not only are associated with the outside of the organ and provide nutrients, but they also influence developmental processes in the root. One of the most investigated of these is the development of the nitrogen fixing nodule. However, many other bacteria are found in the plant's surroundings, the rhizosphere. We want to know how many of these are absolutely essential for plant survival in the environment and can we understand how to produce microbial transplantation experiments to restore degrade soils for food and biofuel production.
Biography

Dr. Ann M. Hirsch joined UCLA in 1988 and has been a full professor in the Department of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology since 1992. Dr. Hirsch earned her B.S. degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at Marquette University in Wisconsin, and earned her Ph.D. in Botany at the University of California-Berkeley. She did her postdoctoral research at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, where she began her research on plant-microbe interactions. Dr. Hirsch has been actively involved in both graduate and undergraduate education and also in international education and research collaborations.
