Research Interests
Dr. Shi's laboratory uses multi-disciplinary approaches to study the oral microbiome. The lab is interested in understanding inter-species interactions in the oral microbial community, especially within oral biofilms. The goal is to develop an understanding of how the microbial species of the oral cavity interact with each other as well as with the human host, and eventually how this contributes to oral health and disease. A secondary focus of the lab involves discovery and investigation of previously uncharacterized oral microbial species.

Wenyuan Shi, Ph.D. obtained his BS degree from Fudan University (Shanghai) in 1984, acquired his Ph.D degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991 and fulfilled his postdoctoral training at University of California at Berkeley during 1992-1995. Dr. Wenyuan Shi is a chair and professor of the Section of Oral Biology at the UCLA School of Dentistry and professor of the Molecular Biology Institute and Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at the School of Medicine. He is co-author and co-inventor of over 200 scientific articles and patents.
