Prof. Weiner's fields of scholarly inquiry include the social and intellectual history of eighteenth and nineteenth century medicine and psychiatry, and the history of professions and institutions. She has published widely, in French and English, on the history of public health, the nursing profession and the politics of health in eighteenth and nineteenth century France Dr. Weiner has been a professor of the medical humanities with an appointment in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences since 1982. Her recent (1996) appointment to the faculty of the History Department adds new dimensions to course offerings in the history of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and the history of medicine. She also teaches seminars on "The Historic Roots of the Healing Arts" and "Madness in the Enlightenment" within the university's Professional School Seminar Program and Honors Collegium. Dr. Weiner has forged several new links within the UCLA Medical School by inviting medical residents to serve as teaching fellows in her seminars; she was also instrumental in helping create the Medical School Thesis Program, and in starting the UCLA Programs in Medical Classics.
